Northern India, particularly the state of Uttarakhand, is defined by its rugged landscapes. Many people migrate to the cities, as the hilly terrain makes farming difficult and basic services scarce. What remains are overgrown ghost villages and a few residents who cannot—or choose not—to leave. Life grows harder each day amid encroaching wilderness and roaming wildlife. Some even warn that China could cross into India here without anyone noticing.
